The advantages of using wood as a building material for housesn

Wooden beauty:

Have you ever looked at a country side home and thought to yourself, “boy, just look at that beauty”? Well, more often than once people who look at a house that is made of wood exclusively fall for them irrespective f whether it is small or big. The beauty just endears them and they sort of get attracted to the material. The beauty of the material itself and the style in which it is made attracts people irrespective of what their design sensibilities are or what their taste in housing is.

Knowledge of the properties of the wood:

It is of very high significance that the builder or the architect is fully aware of the properties of the wood that is being used for the home. Different timber has different properties and even though they are distinctly similar in their look and feel, they all vary in their properties. This has to do mainly with the tree that they belong to, whether they are hard wood timber or soft wood timber.

The difference gets more pronounced with usage. The hard wood variety is extremely durable as a construction material whereas the softer variety is extensively used in making floors, veneers and indoor furniture.

Effect of weather on wood:

Wood is a natural material and the effect of weather is also very well pronounced on them. some of the wood weathers in heat and therefore it expands and contracts according to the season. Some of the varieties of wood are weather proof naturally and so they do not have any changes in their size at all. Certain wood also has the ability to dry out in heat and thus become stronger with passing time. This kind of wood is very good for building the exterior façade of the house.

The advantage wood has over other materials:

Wood is perhaps the only material that can be used to make every part of the house, including the floor, walls and the ceilings. If the furniture is also made out of wood, then we can completely exclude other materials in the building. No other material is so versatile to be used in every part of the home making.

The advantages of Wood as a building material:

1. Thermal properties of wood:

As said earlier, wood dries out when in heat and gains strength. Wood may expand when the humidity in the air is less than 1 percent, but it has the natural ability to neutralize the effect of that expansion.

Wood also does not conduct electricity as quickly as other materials like aluminum, steel etc. that is precisely why wood as a material is used for wire insulating, for making of hardware handles and also for matchsticks.

2. Acoustic properties of wood:

Wood is a light material and therefore it is great for absorption of sound. This is why when we are in a building that is predominantly built with wood, the acoustics is good and there is no echo effect. Wood is the natural choice of material for making theaters, concert and opera halls.

Have you noticed the fact that more than two thirds of the world’s best musical instruments are made out of wood? It is because it has sound velocity which is almost equal to that of the metals but it is not as heavy as the metal and instruments made thus are easy to carry and wield.

3. Electrical properties of wood:

When wood is completely dried, which means the moisture content of the wood is less than 5%, it is the best insulator in the whole world. Similarly, wood does not conduct static energy which can be fatally dangerous to human health.

4. Mechanical properties of wood:

Even inspite of being a relatively light in weight material, wood is a very strong material. The tensile strength of wood if .6/cm3 and it is considered ideal for making places with high footfalls and human traffic like the health centres and fitness halls in gyms.

5. Non oxidation properties:

Wood does not rust like iron and therefore is ideally replaced in place of iron when trying to increase the strength in homes.

6. Easily repairable:

Wood is easily repairable and also entails very less cost to maintain such furniture in comparison to materials that are built with other materials.

7. Wood is aesthetically appealing:

Wood is naturally beautiful material. The grains and the rings in tee wood can be enhanced by slicing it in the best possible way so as to bring out the beauty in it. wood can be colored in lighter and darker shades by applying coats of paint or varnish on it.
